House adjourned over relief to flood victims; Do not exploit flood victims



 
 
PDP-BJP government failed to provide relief to the victims of last year's floods: Congress legislators

Srinagar, Oct 05: - Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was today rocked by Congress MLA’s protest over failure to provide relief and rehabilitation to September 2014 flood victims, revocation of 12.5 per cent Services Tax (ST) imposed on air borne pilgrims and other shrines and other issues with banner-waving, slogan-shouting MLAs of Congress storming the well.


After the day's proceedings started, legislators of Congress party stood at their seats shouting slogans against the PDP-BJP government, alleging it has failed in providing relief to families hit by the September 2015 floods.


"Do not exploit flood victims," read banners displayed by the Congress legislators including G. M Saroori, Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Mohammad Amin Bhat, Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, Chowdhary Mohammad Akram, Gulzar Ahmed Wani, Usman Majeed and Mumtaz Ahmed Khan. The MLAs were seen holding placards, which read "Stop exploiting flood victims".


As soon as the house assembled, Congress members were on their feet displaying banners in the well of the House against alleged “politics over flood relief” and tax on Vaishnodevi pilgrims. The lawmakers raised slogans against the BJP-PDP coalition government and accused it of exploiting the flood victims.


Congress MLA's Saroori and Aijaz Khan demanding that the Speaker suspend the Question hour to take up issues like rehabilitation of flood victims, tax on pilgrims in the state and other issues. As Speaker Kavinder Gupta continued with the business of the house, Congress MLA’s including G. M Saroori, Aijaz Ahmed Khan along with other Congress MLA’s jumped into the well and raised banners which read 'Stop exploiting flood victims' and 'Revoke tax on religious pilgrims'.


Saroori said the PDP-BJP coalition is “insensitive” towards the sufferings of the 2014 Srinagar flood victims. “The present coalition PDP-BJP has failed to procure funds needed for the relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people”, he said and demanded for providing adequate relief and rehabilitation to flood affected of September 2014 as Rupees 10 lakhs for fully damaged houses, Rupees five lakhs for severely damaged houses and Rupees three lakhs for partially damaged houses. Saroori further said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has provided relief to Ladakh flood victims as well to Uttarakhand flood victims but the PDP-BJP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir had "failed" to provide relief to the victims of last year's floods.


The protesting Congress legislators finally came near the speaker's podium, amid ruckus, Speaker Kavinder Gupta adjourned the house for 15 minutes. When the assembly reassembled, the Congress lawmaker along with National conference lawmakers and Independent MLA’s again jumped into the well of the House. The speaker then adjourned it for an hour. When the house reconvened, protesting legislators came near the speaker and clashed with the assembly security staff, one Congress MLA from Bandipora Usman Abdul Majeed was injured along with a marshal who was carried out by his colleagues as he was writhing in pain. As ruckus continued, the speaker adjourned the house for the day.


The Congress members were joined by National Conference members, independent MLAs Shiekh Abdul Rashid and Hakim Mohammad Yasin. Amid pandemonium, the Speaker Kavinder Gupta adjourned the House twice. But as the opposition did not relent, the Speaker adjourned the House for the day.
