Indira Gandhi a dynamic and visionary leader: Saroori

Jammu, November 02: The 31st death Anniversary of former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi was celebrated by the Congress party in the State, while the main function was held at PCC HQ. Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu.

While paying floral tributes to the late prime Minister, Vice President JKPCC and MLA Inderwal G. M Saroori described Smt. Indira Gandhi as a dynamic and visionary leader who remained committed to the secular and socialist ideals of the party and worked for the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden in the country.

Saroori said: She launched various programmes for the upliftment of the poor and the weaker sections of the society. The country progressed on all fronts under her leadership. She firmly believed that secularism is the basic strength of our nation and fought against the communal forces in the country, she sacrificed her life for the unity and integrity of the country. She was known for her bold decisions and she led the country to victory during the 1971 war, leading to creation of Bangladesh and the surrender of over 90 thousand Pakistani troops before the Indian forces, ignoring the threats of United States. She brought into existence the historical 'Shimla Agreement', which committed Pakistan for settlement of all outstanding issues through bilateral dialogue. She successfully handled the foreign policy and remained the Chairperson of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), leading the country to the newer heights in the community of nations.

Saroori recalled her numerous achievements as Prime Minister and as President of the Congress party who always cared a lot for the workers of the party. Her decision to nationalize the banks and discontinuing privy purses to the former rulers of Indian princely states were revolutionary steps amid at equitable distribution of resources.
