Saroori chairs Environment Committee meet

Stresses on protection of environment in the state

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 28: The Committee on Environment, of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly met here under the Chairmanship of MLA, Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Saroori to discuss status of environment management and conservation adopted in widening of National Highways in the state.

Legislators, Mr. Daleep Singh, Dr. Krishan Lal, Mr. Mohammad Abass Wani, Mr. Dina Nath Bhagat, Mr. Devinder Kumar Manyal, Mr. Gulzar Ahmed Wani, Mr. Mumtaz Ahmed and Dr. Gagan Bhagat were present on the occasion and gave their suggestions on protection of environment in the state.

Threadbare discussions were held on measures adopted by the concerned departments in road widening projects including the National Highway.

During the meeting, discussion was also held on issues including dumping of muck directly into hill streams and nallahs, minimizing use of plastic items, encouraging local eco-friendly items like leafy cups and plates, wooden containers and earthenware, protection of wild life sanctuaries in the state.

The Committee discussed present status of pending road works under PMGSY besides asked for clearance of all NOC’s. On the occasion, the Committee was informed that earth works of 366 roads of 2000 km length have been completed without macadamization.

Concerned authorities apprised the Committee about various measures being taken by them to control pollution besides the Committee was also informed about agenda points that were discussed in the last meeting.

Among others, Labour Commissioner, J&K, Ms Vipra Bhal, Regional Officer, NHAI, Mr. R. P. Singh, Chief Wildlife, Mr. Deepak Khanna, Director, Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, Mr. Om Parkash Sharma, Member Secretary, JKSPCB, Mr. Vasu Yadav, other senior officers of concerned departments and Assembly Secretariat attended the meeting.
